Sourcing an EOL FPGA 11 Years After Discontinuation: A Small Win in a Complex Supply Chain
The Challenge: Finding a Legacy FPGA for System Validation
A U.S.-based defense manufacturer indirectly approached Maketronics with a challenging request, sourcing the A1460A-PQ160I, a legacy FPGA from Microchip’s (formerly Actel) A1460 series, which went End-of-Life in 2014.
The part was essential for validating a legacy control system used in mission-critical defense and industrial equipment. After more than a decade since discontinuation, authorized and franchise channels had no available stock, and the global secondary market presented high risks of counterfeits or untraceable sources.
The customer required a single verified sample first, to validate system functionality before committing to a larger production batch.
Why This FPGA Was Critical
The A1460A-PQ160I FPGA is valued for its deterministic performance, low power consumption, and radiation-tolerant design characteristics that make it well-suited for:
Defense and military-grade control systems
Aerospace and instrumentation electronics
Due to its unique architecture and pin compatibility, redesigning the system around a newer FPGA would have been costly, time-consuming, and risky, hence, the urgency to source the original component.
Maketronics’ Role: Quality, Traceability & Transparency
Leveraging its global sourcing network, Maketronics successfully identified new & original stock that met the customer’s specifications. Despite the component being 11 years past EOL, the team ensured reliability through:
✅ Comprehensive third-party testing by an independent, reputed U.S.-based lab, including decapsulation and electrical validation
✅ On-time delivery of the tested, new & original sample
The part passed the customer’s internal quality and functional tests, confirming full compliance with performance requirements.
The Outcome: A Partial Win Built on Trust
The successful delivery and testing of the sample established Maketronics’ credibility as a dependable sourcing partner for obsolete, defense-grade components.
However, when the customer placed a follow-up order, a sharp supplier-side price escalation occurred rendering the full-volume procurement commercially unviable.
While the large order could not proceed, the engagement demonstrated:
✅ Maketronics’ capability to source genuine legacy components over a decade after EOL
✅ Commitment to transparency and integrity, even under market volatility
✅ Proven quality assurance through independent testing and validation
Built on Integrity, Proven by Action
At Maketronics, every case is a chance to demonstrate technical rigor, ethical sourcing, and supply chain transparency, not just transactions. This project highlighted the realities of the obsolete components market, and how Maketronics continues to uphold trust and quality even in unpredictable circumstances.
